I received an autographed copy of this book for Christmas. My parents attend church with the author. I wasn't sure what to expect. It was excellent and I couldn't put it down!

William Henry and Robert are 13 years old and best friends in the 1850's. William Henry is black; Robert is white. Robert is unaware that there is anything strange about this until his mother takes him back to her home in North Carolina and Robert stands to inherit the plantation and all the slaves.

Robert's father and his employer are runners on the Underground Railroad. Robert's mother was raised in the south with lots of slaves pampering her so there is conflict between the two and Robert is left in the dark a lot.

The book follows his struggle as he looks at both sides of the issue.

I loved the book especially because I knew everywhere they discussed. My dh is from North Carolina so those locations were familiar and Robert's family lives in Cecil County, MD which is where I grew up and where my family still is.

The book is published by Moody Publishers and has a definite Christian bent. It handles some tough issues but this book would be very appropriate for older teens. There are some ugly realities about slave ownership that may make it inappropriate for younger readers.

Melissa, this is a great review. What ages do you think this book would be appropriate for, in terms of reading level?

The two reviews of the book posted on Amazon were both very positive.
Thanks for reviewing the book. I have a dd who will be doing Am History soon and this would make a great read.

Junior high and above reading level. You might want to preview content for the younger ones.
