ANIMAL OF THE MONTH: SHARKS
Sharks are ancient. Before there were dinosaurs, there were sharks. Their bodies and behaviors have changed very little over time—they have always been chillingly efficient at finding food and consuming it.
How they hunt.
By turning its head to hone in one direction, a shark can pinpoint sound 3,000 feet away. Some species of shark can smell one part of blood in 100 million parts of water.
What they eat.
Nearly all sharks are carnivores, or meat-eaters, but few species are dangerous to large prey. Sharks will try to eat nearly anything. Strange booty has been found in shark stomachs over the years: license plates, musical instruments, even bottles of wine.
Where do they live?
Sharks live in the oceans of the world, usually in warmer waters. The further from the equator, the less likely it is sharks will be found. Their range expands in the warm summer months, when the waters of the world are warmer. Most sharks can survive only in salt water.
Life-O-Meter.
People kill over a million sharks a year for food, fertilizer, and other products. The outlook for these ancient hunters is fairly good. Still, it is smart to remember that people can be far more dangerous to sharks than sharks are to people.
