"Little Ingrates"
It’s time I admit to myself that I gave birth to ingrates. No matter how hard I try or how much I do, it never seems to be enough. How exactly do you teach your kids not to be greedy little brats? Is there a special self-help book I can sign on to for that? Where’s the nanny episode that takes on this subject? Gah…if I had a dollar for every time I offer up something cool only to be slapped down with a special addendum requested by one of my kids. I could totally afford the therapy I need and a Frappuccino for each visit.
Here are a few examples from my little ingrates:
Example #1: This summer we got one of those portable 12x3 foot pools. Not three minutes in Bug says, “I wish it was bigger”. Ummm…hello? 5 minutes ago you had a backyard filled with dirt! Try swimming in that.
Example #2: I dropped my kids off with a friend to go to see the movie “Ratatouille”. I handed them money for the show, some popcorn and a drink. Immediately I hear “but why can’t we get candy too?” Ummm…because you didn’t star in the movie so I can’t afford to drop $50 on junk food to go with your afternoon entertainment.
Is there really a good way to tell your kids that they are ingrates? I’ve tried being nice about it and explaining how lucky they are to receive what they’re getting, but somehow I don’t think they’re catching on. Probably doesn’t help that the more they request, the longer my answers get about how they’ll look back on this and thank me one day. This could also explain all the calls from me recently that my mom has been getting thanking her for stuff from my childhood.
